Vertical Lines

The following is the grid of a city's street numbers (north/south) and avenue numbers (east/west). Avenue 10 is highlighted. As you can see, avenue 10 runs parallel to the street numbers.

As you can see, for any value of y, we have x equal to 10. Thus the equation of the line is x = 10. Also note that the line is parallel to the y-axis.

Rule       Vertical lines have a graph of x = a, where a is a constant.
Rule

Ex. Lets take a look at the following graphs. Place you mouse over the equation to see its graph.
Y = 2

Y = -2

Y = 4

Y = -4

Try writing two equations on your own. Look at the graphs corresponding to numbers 1 and 2. Enter the correct vertical equation in each box (i.e. x = -20). When you are finished, click the Mark Now button

1 Write the equation of the line.

2 Write the equation of the line.
