Lets look at the ordered pair (4,2), the first number 4 is called the x-coordinate. The second number 2 in the ordered pair is called the y-coordinate.
The x-coordinate tells the distance right (positive) or left (negative).
The y-coordinate tells the distance up (positive) or down (negative).
Ex. 1 Lets see how the following points on the grid below are graphed. Place you mouse over the To Graph point below to see how it is graphed.
Try graphing the following 10 ordered pairs listed below. The instuctions are given next. To start over click the Reset button.
Graph Ordered Pairs Instructions:
Graph the following ten points: 1. (-2,2) 2. (0,-4) 3. (-4,-4) 4. (0,0) 5. (4,5) 6. (-6,-5) 7. (0,-7) 8. (0,3) 9. (0,6) 10. (0,-8)
Use the mouse arrow to find that point on the graph.
Click on the point.
Ex. 2 Lets see how to write the ordered pair for the following points on the grid below. Remember, the x value comes first and the y value comes second.
Point A: Starting at the origin, we move 1 to the right and 3 up. Which gives the ordered pair (1,3).
Point B: Starting at the origin, we move 5 to the left and 2 up. Which gives the ordered pair (-5,2).
Point C: Starting at the origin, we move 1 to the left and 2 down. Which gives the ordered pair (-1,-2).
Point D: Starting at the origin, we move 1 to the right and 3 down. Which gives the ordered pair (2,-3).
Try writing the following 6 ordered pairs on your own. Enter the correct ordered pair in each box i.e. (5,-3). Leave no spaces in your answer. When you are finished, click the Mark Now button
