Coordinate Axes

Coordinates

The numbers in the ordered pair that locates the point on the coordinate plane.

Numerical information usually about the real world.

Domain

The domain of a function is the set of x values of its ordered pairs (x,y).

Equation

An equation is a sentence that contains the equality symbol "=".

Evaluate An Expression

To find the value of an algebraic expression by substituting a given number for each variable and simplifying.

Function

A relation which each element in the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range.

Horizontal Line

A line that is parallel to the x-axis.

Linear Equation

An equation whose graph is a straight line. An equation is linear if the variables occur to the first power only, there are no products of variables, and no variable appears in a denominator.

Ordered Pair

Ordered pair is a pair of numbers one of which is designated as the first and the other is second.

Origin

In the coordinate plane, the point with coordinates (0,0) is called the origin.

Parallel Lines

Coplanar (lines that lie in the same plane) lines that do not intersect.

Perpendicular Lines

Two lines that intersect to form a right angle. The slopes of two perpendicular lines are negative reciprocals of each other.

Quadrant

One of the four regions formed by the axes of the coordinate plane.

Range

The range of a function is the set of y vales of its ordered pairs (x,y).

Relation

Any set of ordered pairs.

Rise

The difference between the y-coordinates of two points; used to determine the slope of a line.

Run

The difference between the x-coordinates of two points; used to determine the slope of a line.

Scatter Plot

A graph in which the data are shown as points in a coordinate plane.

Slope

A number t.at tells how steeply a line slants; the ratio of rise to run.

Slope Intercept Form

A linear equation in the form y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept of the graph.

Solution

The set of numbers from the replacement set that makes an open sentence true.

Standard Form

A form of linear equation, ax+by=c, in which a, b, and c are real numbers, a and b are not both zero, and x and y are variables.

The general pattern of points in a scatter plot.

Vertical Line

A line that is parallel to the y-axis.

X-axis

The horizontal number line in a coordinate plane.

X-coordinate

The first number in an ordered pair used to locate a point on a plane, also called the abscissa.
